I was watching the Antiques Road Show. An elderly man was standing with what looked like an old dresser. It was a small thing. He wondered if it had any value.
The expert appraiser began by asking, “What do you do with it?”
This old fellow in floppy jeans and threadbare shirt replied, “I set my TV on it.”
The appraiser grimaced and said, “I wouldn’t do that any more.”
Then he started to describe it. 18th century. Pre-revolution. New England. This piece was an American classic. He even knew the name of the man that made it. As he was talking he spun it around and to show the craftsmanship. Wide dovetails. Square nails. Then the expert fixed the price. That old beat up TV stand was worth more than $100,000!
The old guy nearly popped one of his overworked suspenders, “HUH?” Watching on television, I said the same thing, “Huh?” The appraiser could hardly contain himself, “I guess you better quit setting the TV on it and get some insurance.”
I thought to myself, “Why isn’t any of my junk worth anything?” Then I mused, “This guy brought in an old beat up TV stand. He carried out a priceless antique treasure. The only thing different about it was the appraisal.
The Holy Spirit blew a refreshing truth back through my tired mind, “Bill, that’s what God does with us. The expert appraiser, God, takes us beaten up old pieces of junk and stamps worth and value on us. He gives us a new appraisal!
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, (Ephesians 2:19)
He said you are no longer an old piece of junk furniture. by my authority as a master appraiser I declare you to be saints and members of my household.
I know it sounds weird but Jesus called you are a saint! “Me a saint? you must be joking.” Get used to it. And go live up to your new appraisal.
That’s the good news, now have a great day!
