Faith is a fine Invention

A man fell off a cliff, but managed to grab a tree limb on the way down. The following conversation ensued:
“Is anyone up there?”
“I am here. I am the Lord. Do you believe me?”
“Yes, Lord, I believe. I really believe, but I can’t hang on much longer.”
“That’s all right; if you really believe you have nothing to worry about. I will save you. Just let go of the branch.”
A moment of pause, then: “Is anyone else up there?”

Truth is that’s the story for many of us. God we trust you… sort of.

Emily Dickinson once wrote,

“Faith” is a fine invention
For Gentlemen who see!
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency!

The only time we like to use faith is when we don’t really need it.

But the Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God. And only through faith are his blessings realized.

Abraham was blessed because he used faith.

And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” (Genesis 16:5)

I have always thought that was an interesting comparison, stars of the heavens and sands of the sea. It always seemed a bit lopsided in favor of the sand. Scientists tell us there are about seven sextillion grains of sand on the earth. I do not know how they got that.

The maximum number of stars visible to the naked eye is around 4000. Then came the telescope. And now the Hubble. Guess what? They estimate there are 70 sextillion stars in the universe. That’s 70 million, million, million. That’s about ten times more stars than grains of sand on the world’s beaches! It’s lopsided in favor of the stars!

At any rate, Abraham’s offspring were to be innumerable. At the time he was 99 and childless. But here is the extraordinary thing: when God said that Abraham believed it.

Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Abraham believed the Lord by faith.

And that made all the difference. It still does. You might find yourself in an impossible situation. Crying out for a solution. God whispers, turn lose and trust me by faith. Turn loose. He will catch you.

That’s the good news, now have a great day.
