Fighting Temptation

on

A friend heard that I was dieting so he sent me this. It’s called

THE NON-STRESS DIET This diet is designed to help you cope with stress which
normally builds up during the day.

** Breakfast
Grapefruit
1 Slice Whole Wheat Toast, Dry
8 oz. Skim Milk

** Lunch
4 oz. Lean Broiled Chicken Breast
1 cup Steamed Spinach
1 cup Herb Tea
1 Oreo Cookie

** Mid-Afternoon Snack
Rest of the Oreos in the package
2 Pints Rocky Road Ice Cream
1 Jar Hot Fudge Sauce Nuts, Cherries, Whipped Cream

** Dinner
2 Loaves Garlic Bread with Cheese
Large Sausage, Mushroom & Cheese Pizza
4 Cans or 1 Large Pitcher of Root Beer
3 Milky Way or Snickers Candy Bars

You might not lose any weight, but at least you won’t be all stressed out about it! I like this diet.

Why do I like this diet? Because it feeds my appetite. It excuses my neglect and encourages me to succumb to temptation. Temptation. That dreaded word. We have so much trouble with it. So many things that tempt us. And its not just our waistlines. It’s every aspect.

I don’t care if it’s the temptation to leave the dishes in the sink until the next day, or the temptation to put off your homework, or the temptation to indulge in a gallon of ice cream or the temptation to fudge on the truth, or the temptation to nurse a habit or indulge in something illicit. Give in, and you give up something precious God wants for you.

What’s the answer for temptation? I remember a class in Seminary when a student said, “I’ve heard all the solutions to temptation but nothing seems to work. The teacher, a wisened old sage named Roy Fish, said, “You are beginning to understand it.”

The problem with temptation is, you can’t beat it. Even Paul struggled. He said,

(Romans 7:15) For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

So what do we do? Give in and eat the rest of the oreos? You can do that, but you won’t lose any weight. NO.

The key to temptation is winning the war before it starts. Flee it. The Bible never says resist temptation. It says “Flee youthful lusts.” J

esus said pray, “Lead us not into temptation.”

Get away from it before it gets you.
