Soren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher. He told of a town populated by nothing but ducks. These aren’t just any ducks. These are church going ducks. So every Sunday the ducks waddle out of their houses and waddle down Main Street to their church. They waddle into the sanctuary and squat in their proper pews. The duck choir waddles in and takes its place.
Then the duck minister comes forward and opens the duck Bible. (Ducks, like all other creatures on earth, seem to have their own special version of the Scripture.) He reads to them: “Ducks! God has given you wings! With wings you can fly! With wings you can mount up and soar like eagles. No walls can confine you! No fences can hold you! You have wings! God has given you wings and you can fly like birds!”
Nothing changed. I was thinking about this. What does it take to make a person change? We all want to change. We know God wants us to change.
Romans 8:29 says God is trying to change us into the image of his son.
The Bible also says we have the power to change. So why don’t we change? Every week we waddle in and waddle out.
Is it because we lack the passion? I wish we could all somehow be infused with passion. But would that change us? Maybe if I could write in some profound way. Maybe a book on Purpose. Help people to understand what their purpose is. I might title it something like oh I don’t know, “Purpose Driven Life.” Do you think it would sell? Would people change?
Here’s what I’ve discovered. Passion doesn’t change us. Even knowing your purpose won’t automatically change you. For real change to occur you have to change your priorities.
Priorities are like the rudder on your ship . You might want to go to another island. Passionately want to go. You might know that is the island God wants you to go to. But if you don’t change that rudder then your ship will just keep sailing the same direction it has always gone. If you want to change. You have to change your priorities. You have to change what you do. And, you have to change what you value.
Matthew 6:33 ” Seek first His kingdom and it’s righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”
