Proverbs 12:18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. NIV
God gave us a tongue to use for encouragement.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
One Sunday I was getting ready to speak when my cell phone buzzed. It was Dennis Swanberg with a text message. “Praying for you today. On my way to NC then TN love ya brother we are blessed to have you at NMBC. Swan.” 7:56 AM.
Here’s a guy that is always on the road ministering to thousands around the world. He took the time to think of me. And he used his tongue, through his fingers and text to encourage me.
I was refreshed and convicted all at once.
I was talking about the tongue to our church and I said, “I don’t think I’ve ever just texted someone to encourage them like that.” My friend John Hunter said afterwards, “You forgot about the text you sent me that was very encouraging.” A few weeks previous I was waiting on a friend and took a minute to text Amy. “Good morning I love you.” A few minutes later I got a reply from John Hunter. “I love you too but I think you have the wrong number.” I turned bright red. I’d sent a reply to the last text I received. I thought it was Amy but it was John.
We laughed. But seriously. How little do I use this tongue to do what God intended for it to do. Encourage one another and build up one another.
Think about the times someone did that for you. In seminary I had a prof pull me aside and say, “Bill you have to stay at this, God has given you a special gift and you need to use it.” Man, that filled me with courage. Three weeks after I became a Christian my old friends didn’t want to have anything to do with me, my parents split up, and my girlfriend broke up with me and started dating our youth minister. Talk about no fun at church. I went to a friend who said, “Bill God must really want to use you if he is allowing you to go through all of this.”
That was may of 1977. I still remember it. Use that tongue to build someone up.
Things will be different starting today.
Encourage one another.
