What makes you mad? I was thinking about this the other day. What really ticks me off?
What makes me angry?
The pets tearing up stuff in my yard and in my garage. That makes me so mad. I get angry at my weed eater that won’t start. I get angry with the person who keeps bashing my mailbox. Mosquitoes make me mad. I hate fire ants. The list could go on.
What makes you mad? Would it surprise you to know that not all anger is wrong?
Philip’s translation: Ephesians 4:26-27 If you are angry, be sure that it is not out of wounded pride or bad temper. Never go to bed angry-don’t give the devil that sort of foothold.
Not all anger is wrong.
There is a list of all the times the word anger or angry occurs in six versions of the bible. 2022 times. That’s a lot. There is a lot of anger and there is a lot about anger.
What I realized is that good people were often angry. Jesus got angry. Moses was angry. David grew angry.
Sometimes anger is the appropriate response. Jesus never did anything inappropriate and he was angry, so we must understand that anger is not always wrong. Eph. 4:26 Be angry and do not sin.
The key isn’t so much anger, as it is what makes us angry.
We should be angry about the things that anger God.
Let’s look at what made Him mad. As I read this, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t the same stuff that angers me. God gets angry at injustice. When a child is mistreated. When a religious person is arrogant or snobbish. He is angry when someone is mistreated or abused. It even angers God to see us abuse ourselves.
I read this and say,” sure, I get angry about that.” But not as often as I like. Take my list and compare it to Jesus. My anger stuff is usually pretty small. He tends to get angry over bigger things. Things that matter for eternity.
So that means that most of my anger is misplaced.
Be angry, but don’t sin. Let God get a grip on your anger.
