God, We Trust You, Sort Of

Faith and the man that fell off the cliff

A man fell off a cliff, but managed to grab a tree limb on the way down. The following conversation ensued:

“Is anyone up there?”

“I am here. I am the Lord. Do you believe me?”

“Yes, Lord, I believe. I really believe, but I can’t hang on much longer.”

“That’s all right; if you really believe you have nothing to worry about. I will save you. Just let go of the branch.”

A moment of pause, then: “Is anyone else up there?”

Truth is, that’s the story for many of us. God we trust you, sort of.

Its easy to talk about faith when you don’t need it.

But when life is on the line, well, that’s a different story.  When you have a child that’s out of control and you feel like you are hanging by a thread you cry out to the lord, “Help. . .”

God says,” Trust me.”

You want to. You hope to, but its hard. When the doctor finds a lump and he says, “We need more tests.” Hopes’ minutes turn to hours.

God says, “Trust me.”

You want to, but the fears just run wild in your head. Sometimes the economy seems like a ball and chain.   Debt is weighing you down. Then something big breaks down. You don’t know how you will make the ends meet.

God says, “Trust me on this, I can take care of it.”

You want to scream back, “God you might be able to part the sea and bring sight to the blind, but I have a car payment due Tuesday and let’s face it God, you’ve never dealt with a finance company before.”

Its easy to talk about faith when you don’t need it. Yeah, God, I’ll trust you. I believe.

It’s a whole new thing to live with faith when life is on the line.

Sometimes you want to shout, “Is anyone else up there.”

He’s all you need. Trust him.

Listen to Psalm 46. Its written directly from the lips of the Lord.

Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

When you come to these cliffhanger moments and your heart is pounding and you can’t catch your breath. Be still. The literal meaning is “stop striving.”

Release your grip.

Trust Him.

Know that he is God.
